Since 2022, the Murmansk Region has topped the list of the five most popular Arctic regions for tourists. This assessment was given by the Analytical Service of the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR).
"The Murmansk Region is the undisputed flagship and most accessible region of the Russian Arctic. The region annually welcomes a number of guests comparable to its own population. The main attractions of the Murmansk Region are hunting for the northern lights, gastronomic tourism, skiing, and the growing trend for "conscious solitude" in modern glamping and ecospheres," according to ATOR.
Among the most popular tourist destinations in the region, the Association's analysts highlight the legendary Teriberka with its opportunity to see whales; Khibiny with its ski slopes; the Sredny and Rybachy Peninsulas; and unique icebreaker cruises on the icebreaker "50 Years of Victory."
"Any time of year is the best time to visit the Murmansk Region." We are developing year-round tourism and are confident that nowhere else offers such a diversity of experiences—nature, activities, culture, and Arctic cuisine. We live where others dream of vacationing—and there are compelling figures behind this slogan. In the first seven months of this year alone, the Murmansk Region entered the top three in the Northwestern Federal District for tourist flow growth (+18.7%), with more than 40% of all Arctic trips coming to our region. Tourism is a powerful driver of our economy, having a multiplier effect on related sectors. Tourist flow enables the development of new facilities and services that improve the quality of life for our people. We are creating new recreational destinations, infrastructure, and developing domestic tourism, primarily for the comfort of northerners themselves," commented Alexandra Kondaurova, Deputy Governor of the Murmansk Region.
