The official start of the festival "Northern Character" was given in Murmansk, which for the 16th time unites filmmakers from all over the world in an effort to reflect the multifaceted personality of a person living in the North. The participants and spectators of the grand opening of the festival were greeted by the Senator of the Russian Federation from the Murmansk Region Elena Dyagileva.
The senator called film production an important factor for the development of the regions" economies and increasing their recognition both at the federal and global levels. The comprehensive approach applied by the decision of Governor Andrei Chibis has made the Murmansk Region one of the most competitive sites for film production over the past five years, has made it possible to achieve an economic effect, create new jobs and increase the tourist attractiveness of the territories. According to the senator, the experience of the Murmansk Region can be applied in many regions of the country.
"Over the course of 16 years, the festival has become a powerful event, known far beyond the region. And the Murmansk Region is one of the most popular places for Russian film crews to work. Of course, the Arctic has always attracted talented directors: Alexander Rou created his fairy tales here, the feat of the lucky "Pike" commander Fyodor Vidyaev was filmed, and Andrey Zvyagintsev"s Leviathan came to life. But a systematic approach to the development of film production has allowed us to increase the number of films shot in the region annually from 1.5 to 25 films," noted Elena Dyagileva.
A striking example of successful films created in recent years in the Kola Arctic region is the opening film of the Philately film festival. The film was shot entirely in the Murmansk region last year under the working title Firefly with the support of the regional government"s film rebate. The film has already won several awards at film festivals. It is noteworthy that all roles, except for the main ones, were played by residents of Murmansk.
In addition to Philately, this year"s program of competitive and non-competitive screenings includes more than 100 films, 16 of which were created in our region. Film screenings are held not only in movie theaters, but also in libraries, leisure centers and museums, as well as in the open-air cinema hall in the Container Hall space, which is beloved by northerners. Also, as part of the festival, free lectures and master classes from professional filmmakers who will come to the film festival are organized for everyone. And the awarding of the winners of the film festival will take place on November 16 at the closing ceremony. Admission to all festival events is free.
