Warm welcome from northern Murmansk: young media professionals from foreign countries impressed by the Arctic

6 November 2024

In early November, the Arctic capital was visited by foreigners who arrived in Russia to exchange experiences in the field of journalism. During the regional program of the All-Russian youth educational forum "SHUM" as part of the shift "SHUM. Journalism of Industry 5.0", the guests got acquainted not only with regional media, but also with culture, history and attractions.

The delegation was met by the head of the youth policy committee of the Murmansk region, Maria Chernysheva.

"Russia is an amazing country – multifaceted and interesting. You are in the Far North, but despite the fact that it is cold here, the people here have a big soul and a warm heart. We hope that the trip will be interesting and eventful for you," she said.

The five days of the program were packed with events. Following the visit, media specialists will prepare travel blogs telling about the trip.

Specialists from the Murmansk Region Tourism Committee, the Murmansk Region Tourist Information Centre and the "Course to the North" project presented presentations about the region to the guests, telling them about 10 reasons to fall in love with the Murmansk Region. After the official part, which took place in the Regional Management Centre, an informal conversation took place.

"After talking to the guests, we learned that other countries also have the problem of population outflow from northern regions to warmer ones, and from small cities to larger ones. To exchange experience in solving this problem, we exchanged contacts with countries in Africa and China. We are also ready to cooperate with the guests in the tourism sector," shared Venera Kravchenko, head of the "Course to the North" project.

The employees of the radio station "POWER Hit Radio" were happy to welcome the foreigners. In the Murmansk Regional Scientific Library, a "Round Table" was held for the participants of the "SHUM. Journalism of Industry 5.0" shift with representatives of the "Creative Media Factory", where the problems and practices of Russian journalism were discussed. The same topic was touched upon at a meeting with the chairman of the Murmansk branch of the "Union of Journalists of Russia", director of the ANO "Producer Center "Northern Character" Svetlana Soldatova. They shared opinions, knowledge and contacts.

The media specialists also visited the Murmansk Arctic University (MAU), where, in addition to Russians, foreigners are also studying today. There they watched presentations about Tajikistan, Pakistan, Morocco, India and Russia, prepared by students representing these countries. After that, the guests had the opportunity to communicate with young people in an informal setting over a cup of tea.

A meeting with the lecturer of the Russian Society "Knowledge" I.P. Bondarenko was also prepared for the participants of the shift. They talked about exchanging practices in creating a student media center.

Much attention during the acquaintance with Murmansk was paid to the topic of patriotism. On National Unity Day, young people representing India, Zimbabwe, Cameroon, China, Costa Rica, Moldova, Serbia, South Ossetia and Brazil willingly visited the memorial complex "Valley of Glory". The guests were told about the 80th anniversary of the defeat of the Nazi troops in the Arctic, about the heroic defenders of the North. All those present laid flowers at the monument, honoring those killed in battle with a minute of silence.

The meeting of the participants with the Sami turned out to be bright. During the visit to the ethnographic Sami center of the Kola region, everyone tried dishes, wove amulets, got acquainted with the life of the small peoples of the North and even tried on national clothes.

The guests also visited the Northern Fleet Naval Museum and the nuclear icebreaker Lenin.

The regional program also included creativity – participation in the volunteer project "Kind Workshop" and a master class on custom T-shirts in the northern theme from the winner of the regional stage of the All-Russian Student Spring in the direction of "Art". The guests took some of the souvenirs made with their own hands with them, and some were donated to a charity fund.

The guests were left with indelible impressions by the Arctic cuisine, represented by sea urchins, scallops, crabs, cod, venison, lingonberries and cloudberries, and the northern lights, which every visitor to the northern region dreamed of seeing.

The organizers of the regional program for foreign media specialists are the Directorate of the World Youth Festival and the subjects of the Russian Federation.
