As part of Russia"s BRICS chairmanship in 2024, Murmansk was chosen as the venue for the 6th Working Group on Cooperation in Oceanic and Polar Research Zones, which will be held from 13 to 15 June. In Russia, such a meeting has so far only been held in Moscow – on September 23, 2020.
More than 50 scientists from seven countries are taking part in the in-person scientific event: Russia, India, China, South Africa, Brazil, Iran and the UAE. The researchers will present the latest scientific and technological achievements in the field of oceanographic and polar research, and discuss the agenda of joint events as part of Russia"s BRICS chairmanship. Organizations from the Murmansk Region will talk about the results of their polar and oceanographic research.
The meeting was opened with a welcoming speech by Oksana Demchenko, First Deputy Governor of the Murmansk Region. "The Murmansk Region is the leading scientific base of the Arctic. We have significant scientific potential, we employ many talented researchers, and we implement support measures for young scientists. The region ranks first in the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation in terms of the number of employees conducting scientific research and development. It is in the Murmansk Region that the Kola Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences operates – the only federal research center in Russia beyond the Arctic Circle. The selection of Murmansk as the venue for the 6th working group on cooperation in the oceanic and polar research zones is a great honor and responsibility that we readily take on," said the First Vice-Governor and wished the participants fruitful work.
The event was organized by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Arctic Development and Economy of the Murmansk Region with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, as well as the P.P.
