The comprehensive development of the Arctic and the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor were discussed in Moscow at a meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Yuri Trutnev. The event was attended by Andrei Chibis, Chairman of the State Council"s relevant commission and Governor of the Murmansk Region.
Commenting on the results, the regional governor noted that the key objectives for maintaining Russia"s leadership in the Arctic include ensuring growth in cargo traffic beyond 2035; expanding geological exploration, creating new raw material centers and high-tech manufacturing; and ensuring year-round navigation along the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor and its key section, the Northern Sea Route.
"We are confident that only a comprehensive project will help us develop the Russian Arctic and maintain stable freight traffic along the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor. Importantly, Russian President Vladimir Putin supports us in this. Our region plays a key role in the development of the Third Transport Ring thanks to the Murmansk Transport Hub. As instructed by the head of state, its capacity must be increased at least threefold. This will make Murmansk one of the largest logistics hubs on the Third Transport Ring and open up new opportunities for cargo owners and logistics companies," noted Andrey Chibis.
It"s worth noting that the initiative to launch the comprehensive "Arctic and Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor" project was first voiced during the work of the State Council Commission on the Northern Sea Route and the Arctic, headed by Andrei Chibis. The proposals were developed by the Maritime Board and other federal bodies and received the support of President Vladimir Putin in November.
The regional head thanked Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Trutnev, Presidential Aide and Chairman of the Maritime Board Nikolai Patrushev, and Minister for the Development of the Far East and Arctic Alexei Chekunkov for their support and collaboration on the project.
