The State Council of the Russian Federation Commission on the Northern Sea Route and the Arctic, chaired by Murmansk Region Governor Andrei Chibis, published a new analytical report, "The Arctic in Figures 2025." The commission is conducting extensive analytical and research activities to comprehensively analyze Arctic territories and develop a knowledge base on the Russian and international Arctic.
This new analytical collection is dedicated to the development of the Russian Arctic and covers a wide range of issues, from the historical stages of northern exploration to current development strategies for key settlements in the macroregion. The collection pays special attention to the five-century history of the Northern Sea Route and its significance for the development of the Arctic and Russia.
"We paid special attention to the development of the Northern Sea Route, its five-century history, and its importance to Russia. You"ll be able to trace all eras: from the first attempts to break through the ice to the present day, when each year brings new cargo turnover records and the most modern icebreakers are put into service. Special attention is given to the Soviet period, when the infrastructure foundation of this key Arctic transport artery was laid," commented Andrey Chibis, Governor of the Murmansk Region and Chairman of the Commission.
This collection traces the evolution of Russia"s presence in the Arctic through the lens of various historical eras—from pioneering times to the present day. Special attention is given to the Soviet period, when the infrastructure for the future key transport route was being formed. The publication analyzes the development of the Northern Sea Route as part of the Trans-Arctic Corridor, presenting detailed information on cargo flows and systematized data on the history and current status of the Russian icebreaker fleet.
A significant portion of the materials is devoted to the development prospects of the key settlements of the Russian Arctic, which form the supporting framework of the macroregion and ensure the implementation of the country"s strategic objectives in the northern territories.
