A delegation from China"s leading Tsinghua University visited MAU to study the experience of Arctic development

As part of strengthening scientific and educational ties between Russia and China, Murmansk Arctic University was visited today by a delegation from one of the most prestigious universities in the world, Tsinghua University (PRC). The guests were welcomed by Deputy Governor of the Murmansk Region Anna Golovina. In her speech, she emphasized the strategic importance of cooperation between the two countries:

“It is a great honor for us to host a delegation from one of the world’s leading universities, the alma mater of the Chairman of the PRC Xi Jinping, in the Murmansk Region. The topic of the educational and familiarization practice – the study and research of the development of the Arctic – is extremely important and relevant today. We are interested in developing Russian-Chinese relations, in expanding the area of interaction between our universities, including in terms of joint research and development. In the future, we plan for students from MAU to visit the People’s Republic of China as part of the academic exchange program,” the Vice Governor noted.

Acting MAU acting rector Maria Knyazeva introduced the university to the guests as a key scientific and educational center of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation, which united the potential of two leading regional universities. She focused on the unique research infrastructure of MAU, demonstrated to the Chinese delegation:

“Today"s meeting is an important step in the development of international scientific and educational cooperation in the Arctic. Our laboratories clearly demonstrate the potential for joint advanced research. I am confident that this visit will become a solid foundation for a long-term and mutually beneficial partnership. We are open to dialogue and are ready to work together to ensure that knowledge and technology serve the progress and prosperity of our countries,” said Maria Knyazeva.

The MAU infrastructure was presented to the participants of the delegation from China – students and scientific supervisors visited the Chemistry and Technology of Marine Bioresources laboratory and the Aquarium Complex. During the excursion, the guests were told about the project for phytoextraction of heavy metals from wastewater, and they also got acquainted with the developments of the digital cadastre of rare plants of the Rybachy and Sredny Park, with Arctic species of fish, mollusks and crustaceans of the Barents Sea, etc.

In addition, during the visit, specific areas for joint work were discussed: conducting research in the field of Arctic technologies, ecology, sustainable development, processing of bioresources; programs for the exchange of students and teachers; attracting new partners to the Russian-Chinese project of the MAU "Arctic School of Longevity"; expanding the practice of teaching Chinese students at the MAU.

The program of the Chinese delegation"s stay in Murmansk also includes a visit to the nuclear-powered icebreaker "Lenin", the museum of the history of the commercial port and the regional museum of local history.

Let us recall that a modern world-class campus is being created on the basis of the Murmansk Arctic University. The project is being implemented on the instructions of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin and within the framework of the strategic plan "Living in the North!". Its first facility will be the Coastal Training and Simulation Center, which will be fully commissioned next year. And in 2025, its first part will open – the Training Complex for the Fight for the Damage of a Vessel with an Autonomy Module.
